Ron Zacapa – Sistema Solera 23 – Tasting Notes


At the Whisky & Rum aan Zee Festival we tried to explore also some rums. In these explorations we got across the Ron Zacapa – Sistema Solera 23 rum. What do they tell us about it? 


Zacapa´s history is based in the climate and land of Guatemala, as the country´s fertile, volcanic soil is the one of the most ideal places in the world to grow sugarcane. Master Blender Lorena Vásquez ages the rum 2300m above sea level in aging facility that´s been lovingly dubbed the “house above the clouds.” At this highaltitude, there is an average temperature of 62 degrees Fahrenheit, so the aging is never subjected to wide variations in temperature. This also allows the rum to develop its deep, rich taste.
It is a blend of rums aged from 6 to 23 years old, using a solera system. The nose gave me first some soft honey, raisin and chocolate creamy feel. Soft spices in the mix with some dried prunes and apricots. A light leather note, some soft clove and tobacco coming through with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is soft, creamy, honey, soft flower and the notes that I found on the nose. Very balanced and warm feel to it. A medium length soft finish with a surprising dash of lemon freshness in the end. Gave this wonderful dram a 7,5 out of 10. Something I really would love to have a bottle of enjoy it slowly…
