A while back we participated in a bottle share of the SMWS Whisky for a Year 2014. Each month a SMWS bottle came out and got shared with a bunch of people. Great way to discover more of this independent bottler. First one I take a look at it the SMWS G 1.12 called Mouth-Puckering Sweetness. Bottled at 60,3% and 23 years old grain whisky from the North British distillery. Distilled in 1990 and matured in a refill hogshead.
On the nose I can find soft vanilla and powder sugar. White pepper, cereal, honey and citrus fruit notes. Something also in here that reminds me of pine cones and earthy forrest notes… Fresh, sweet and with some darker notes beneath.
The palate brings some more citrus notes and also gives me a creamier vanilla note then I first got on the nose. Lots of fruit notes coming forward with rich nutty raisin bread. Red apple, orange, clementine, lemon, peach, pomolo, pomegranate, plums and dried pineapple and mango. Feels like a lush fruit cake.
Adding some water gives it a new dimension to it, and the harder citrus notes fade to the back and release even more sweetness. Creamy and rich dram. Good length finish on it with some soft earthy notes in the back again, but mostly creamy vanilla and fruit, lots of fruit and honeyed sweetness. Scoring it an 7,5 out of 10. Think it is more balanced without adding water and shows more fruit notes undiluted.
