In the Diageo Special Releases 2016 line up an 25 year old Auchroisk bottling can be found. Back in 1990 refill American Oak hogsheads and refill European Oak butts were filled with spirit and left to mature for 25 years. Now 3.954 bottles at 51.2% are available in this 2016 release.
On the nose I find notes of powdered sugar, soft vanilla, white pepper, nuts and a hint of salted caramel fudge. There is also a more dominant side to it that shows me gummi bears, earthy and green root vegetables and sourness of granny smith apples. A bit of a strange mix to be honest, lets move on to the palate…
The palate shows the sweetness more then it was visible on the nose at first. Rich honeyed notes of cassis, vanilla creme, red- and black current, strawberries, mocha foam cake, raisins, red apples, oranges, lemon, mint and loads of fruity notes like peaches, banana, plums and pineapple. This is totally different then what the nose gave me at first! A creamy and vanilla sweet finish with dried fruits and cherries. Interesting dram for sure! Grows on me with every sip I take… Thanks Diageo Netherlands for the sample!
