The Diageo Special Releases 2016 line up contains an expression of the Brora distillery. Distilled in 1977, matured in refill American Oak hogsheads and refill European Oak butts for 38 years before 2.984 bottles of whisky were released at 48.6%. Light waxy smoky notes on the nose with sweet yellow stone fruits, vanilla and black berries. Soft wood and spice notes reminding me of beeswax and wood polish. Clove, thyme, lemon, oranges, mint, dark chocolate, black pepper, toffee, salty crispy bacon and warm red apples.
The palate has loads of honeyed fruit notes and warm spices. Cinnamon rolls, red apples, toffee, cherry, red current, black berries, honey, yellow plums, raisins, cranberry, prunes, mint, honey suckle, gorse heather and Turkish delights. Medium length sweet finish with baking spices, almonds, macademia nuts and chocolate chip cookies. A complex dram for sure! Thanks Diageo Netherlands for providing the sample!
