Gordon & MacPhail – Rare Vintage – Strathisla 1960

1184829_205311759662379_754071683_nFrom Gordon & MacPhail comes this fine expression in their Rare Vintage range from the Strathisla distillery. Distilled there in 1960, then secured safely in the warehouses to mature in a Sherry butt and to be finally bottled at 43% in 2012 by Gordon & MacPhail.

Nosing this whisky I can’t stop thinking about a rich dense fruitcake in front of me. Stuffed with rum soaked raisins, dried apricots, cranberries, prunes, oranges, Turkish fruits, dried mango and cherries. Candied sugar pieces on top of that cake together with a thick layer of vanilla glazing. It is like a table filled with sweets and fresh backed products, fruitcakes, vanilla cream buns, chocolate glazed donuts, nougat, gummibears, chocolates and loads of different marshmallows all into a glass…

The palate shows me a rich orchard fruit combination with honeycomb, cherry blossom and a good dose of citrus freshness. Grapefruit, candied and fresh oranges, some soft mixed nut flavours, dark chocolate, liquorice, anise, baking spices and candied ginger. A good length of a finish that leaves a candied mouthfeel together with that fruitcake emerging again…

Thanks Gordon & MacPhail for sharing a sample of this Rare Vintage!

Cheers,
Ansgar
